Japanese encephalitis virus is a mosquito transmitted virus of public and animal health significance throughout southern Asia and parts of Australia. The PhD student will work across CSIRO Business units (AAHL and H&B) and partner with Charles Sturt University, to address key gaps in the understanding of JEV pathogenesis and interactions with related viruses (inc. Murray Valley encephalitis and West Nile virus) co-circulating in Australia. This PhD opportunity will access sophisticated in vitro / ex vivo / in vivo models, multi-omics and structural biology techniques, coupled with traditional virology and molecular virology techniques (inc. cell culture, virus propagation and purification, virus genome manipulation, insect infection and husbandry). Together, this will enable the scholar to further the understanding in the pathogenesis of mosquito-borne pathogens of significance to animal and public health, informing diagnostic development and provide a solid skill base for a scientific leader of the future.
