Entry Requirements

A student entering the Master of Counselling will normally be required to hold an approved 3-year degree in Counselling (AQF Level 7) or a Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 7) in other cognate areas as approved by the University.

Entry by non-graduates who have extensive relevant industry experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Head of School, Social Sciences.

Applicants are required to complete an additional personal statement and attend an interview (refer to application form). Interviews for International students on a Student visa will be conducted by Skype.

Applicants must hold a valid Suitability Card (Blue Card), which is issued by the Public Safety Business Agency, prior to commencement. Please see the Blue Card link for further details.

The Master of Counselling offers a limited number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) as well as domestic fee paying places. Offers for both CSP and fee paying places will be made after the application due date for the program.

CSP will be allocated on the basis of your Grade Point Average in the degree used to meet admission requirements. Applicants falling below the demand-driven cut-off for a CSP may be offered a domestic fee paying place (with the option to access FEE-HELP) subject to capacity limitations. USC reserves the right to offer a small number of CSP to students from ATSIC or disadvantaged backgrounds.

Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and permanent visa holders enrolled in a fee paying place will have the option of applying for a CSP in subsequent semesters if one becomes available. In these cases, the student's current GPA in the Master of Counselling will be used to assess eligibility for a CSP place using the same entry cut-off applied for new CPS entrants during that admission period.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you also need to meet the minimum English language requirements for your chosen program. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you may like to enrol in one of our English Language Programs.

Post admission requirements

You must hold a current Blue Card before starting your first supervised counselling experience. Many agencies also require a Police check in addition to the Blue Card.

Master of Counselling overview

The Master of Counselling allows students to utilise their knowledge of theory in practice. Monash University is an example of this, providing extensive workplace placement to students so they might see the relevance of the curriculum as they progress. Unlike the certificates and diplomas, the coursework is more rigorous, requiring more contact hours and regular meetings with a supervisor through the two-year duration.

Employment options

Graduates from this program can expect a greater depth of counselling opportunities than the certificate and diploma level courses. The experience gained throughout makes trauma counselling a solid choice, as fresh graduates will have gained knowledge of how best to utilise their knowledge in a tactful manner. This particular line of work is well-suited to ambitious individuals wishing to open their own practice.

Another sound choice would be as a relationship counsellor. Family Relationships, a government-sponsored initiative, utilise graduates from these programs to help severed families come to agreements for the sake of their children.

The list of specialisations mentioned here are all equally viable opportunities for Master of Counselling graduates.

Scholarships and funding

Counselling-specific scholarships are rare, but there are general opportunities available. These often have esoteric requirements, however. ANU offers the John Monash Scholarship, for instance; this is a scholarship for master level students planning to study overseas. Other scholarships with different requirements are available, but aspirants are urged to consider the often-unique entry requirements.

Prerequisites and selection process

Entrants can be from any prior bachelor level degree, but as with the certificates and diplomas, prior experience is helpful. In the case of Monash University, just two years of experience can reduce the time it takes to complete the degree by up to a full year.
